I first heard this story when I was in high school honors English. We were doing a storytelling unit and one girl had chosen it to read aloud. She made up a tune to go along with the song and I remember tearing up even as a young highschooler.
Now? Now that I'm a mama? I'm a blubbering fool.
Justin hasn't read it yet. When I suggested he read it this morning after working 144 hours in 12 days he declined my offer. He tends to be a blubbering fool at times too.
But then again, it seems I cry at almost all childrens' books these days.....

Yep. This book is certain to make the most stoic blubber. I have it on my shelf...maybe I'll read it to my teenagers tonight. xoxoChristine
How sweet that your classmate made up a tune to the song! That got me thinking about how powerful this book could be in song form. Kind of like Cat's in the Cradle but more sweet and less depressing.
Oh, I have a love/hate relationship with this book :-)
I hate it that I cry, every time I hear it.
Our old church used to do it as a 'skit' on Mother's Day! It was horrible how everyone there would just cry and cry. They did with mama and little kid voices and then the pastor would fill in.

Yup. I sob, I rarely read it, but I sure do love it!
I have read this book to 7 kids. I do not know if tears actually left my tearducts, but I have choked up. I am glad that you read it to my grandson. It is a great book.

I love this book too. We actually have a song for it that I have sung since childhood...I wonder if it could be the same? My kids love this book too, especially the part about the boy dumping his mom's watch down the toilet...
This book actually freaks me out a little. The fact that she climbs in the window is a little creepy.
But besides that part I do love it.
