Applecheeks

So I've been tossing around the idea of using cloth diapers for some time now. My friend Amy had such a revelation one time when she realized that one doesn't have to exclusively use cloth. You know, you could use disposable while out and about and cloth at home. Imagine that! We were both stoked with the idea. Xochi has also been having a bit of diaper rash which has also prompted me to consider cloth again. I think I've taken care of the problem by not using the Pampers sensitive swaddlers (evidently they're not so "sensitive") - but we'll see.

So anyway, I've been looking around at cloth, reading reviews etc. over the last year or so and nothing has really stuck out to me. A lot of people love Bum Genius but a lot of the reviews said that the velcro on them wears out. If I spend $18 or so on a diaper - I don't know about you - but for me, it better last for a reeaaallly long time. What I did love about Bum Genius, though, was the fact that they have one diaper that fits all sizes. The thought of buying enough diapers in x-small, small, medium, large and x-large also seemed daunting (and expensive).

So anyhow, long story short - I ran across these diapers on Soule Mama this morning and they are truly the first ones that have totally appealed to me. They are pocket diapers - which in my limited cloth diapering knowledge means you don't have to use covers. They have snaps - thus removing the velcro issue. AND, a really cool thing - they only come in two sizes. The first to fit 7 - 20 lbs and the second to fit 18 - 40 lbs. Another bonus is that they come in totally cute colors and the gathers at the legs and waist are really adorable. They also received some really great reviews for slim-ness, fit, etc. I entered the drawing on Soule Mama for them but I'm also going to look into ordering some. Then I'm going to scoot myself over to a local baby store and see if the owner will consider carrying them. I'll let you know what comes of all this, if anything.

In other news, we're all a little sick over here. At least Steele, Adia and I are. I sent Justin and Xochi off to church this morning and the stuffies stayed home. It was pretty cute though - Steele and Adia both started crying when they found out they weren't going. So it's been a quiet, enjoyable morning except for a tad bit of grumpiness and snottiness all around.

Um. Cutz? Your link to Soule Mama is a link to a white mini van ( I suppose you are shopping for) on Craigslist. :0) It couldn't be that you are sick and sleep deprived, could it?! Love you!

On a side note, I am going to check out those diapers.

Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!! That's hilarious!! I'm gonna leave it like that - just because I am a crazy, sick, sleep-deprived woman.

Okay, so you've started me thinking about cloth diapers again and I've spent the last 45 minutes doing the math on the white board here by the computer.

Come September, we will again have two kiddos in diapers and that's expensive.

Would going cloth be cheaper? In the long run... Could I handle the laundry? I don't know.

I liked the looks of the AppleCheeks, too. We used cotton cloth with velcro diaper wraps and a diaper service when Daniel was a baby...

They weren't my favorite. On a newborn baby, those diapers were bigger than his head.

Cutzi,
I am not sure if you have used cloth before. But, having used them myself I can tell you that there is a big benefit to having velcro. If your baby wiggles around then having snaps might be an issue. I used the bum genius and the velcro is still as strong as the day I bought them. They have a tip to restore the stickiness if you notice it starting to fail. Other than the snaps, those look cute. You can always buy one and try it. Good luck!

That's so funny...I've really been considering cloth lately. Even though I feel silly that it's taken me this long to pull the trigger on it. Oh well.

Those Applecheeks look great! I think I would buy one of these and one Bum Genius and see which I like best. (And I've had the same revelation about not having to exclusively use cloth- brilliant!)

Hey Cutzi, a gal I know has a business of diapers called SnapEz. you could check out her website. They seem good to me - if I was starting over, I would give them a try.

Love cloth diapers! We've used them on our last two babies and have tried a variety. I loved the fit of BumGenius and they're easy to transition to from disposables. The velcro on ours is still strong but looks horrible.

I've heard great things about Applecheeks but haven't tried them. I would advise you to choose one or two kinds to try and then stick with the one you like best. It gets expensive and time-consuming to keep buying new kinds looking for the perfect diaper.

They really are easy once you get used to them. The biggest trick is remembering to change them more often and finding pants to fit over them (they add a lot of roundness to the tush) They are SO much cuter than disposables and so soft. Good luck!

I have at least two pink ones (bum genius) that you can have. Remind me. You know I was happy with them and I plan to use them again. However, I am going to wait a few beats to start. I have a friend who does exclusively cloth and she said that they are too big for babies under 10 pounds to be worthwhile. Makes sense to me.

Also, I really liked using the disposable liners with them. They sell a roll of a million at Along Comes a Baby and this kept the diapers looking new as well as kept me from ever scraping "stuff" off of the diaper.

Rebecca & Jodi, seriously don't all or nothing it. Buy two or three and use those to replace two or three diaper changes and see what you think about cleaning, cost, comfort etc. That is how I did it at first. Then I bought a new one each week until I felt confident enough to use them all day. This worked until Ava was too big for them at which point we started potty training (I think).

Cutzi,

You're a brave woman. I wouldn't touch cloth diapers with a 10 foot pole!

Hope you all feel better. Gunnar was home Sunday for the same reason.

The kids that I nanny for (in the summer) use Apple Cheeks, and I LOVE them - the fleece on the inside is really soft, and they seemed to hold up well - through 2 kiddos :)

If it weren't for the LAUNDRY. I just can't wrap my brain around doing laundry EVERY.DAY.

But now you've got me considering them again.

And Amy- I'd completely forgotten about the disposable liners that you found and loved.

What to do... what to do...

You don't have to do laundry every day! I had enough diapers in my stash that by the time my second was 16 months or so I was washing every four days, and the older she got the longer I went. It's really not a lot of work.

Valarie, why are snaps a problem if the baby moves? I used AppleCheeks (LOVE THEM) since my daughter was about 8 months old, and they fit WAY better than any diaper I ever tried, and this is my second kid in cloth. Just curious!

Great post! I am not a subscriber but am an AC fan so was happy to read this.

Ah, the beach? YES!!! An awful lot of people seem to be using cloth... we didn't really consider it (I'd be ok with wet ones, but the dirty ones, I'm not too sure!) I could maybe try the only at home part and see how it went though. Maybe if we have another it will be something to look into a little more. Lots of good ideas in these comments.

I am with Valarie. My BumGenius velcro is great after a year. As Amy said cloth/disposables combo does take the pressure off. The flushable liners are a lifesaver. I also have recently added a toilet sprayer and I LOVE it! It makes "de-poop-i-fying" much easier...now that real food is in Henry's diet I can't just throw the poopies in the washer. Sorry if that was TMI...Just want to give you the whole scoop :)

mom4life.com is a great online store for BumGenius and free shipping. Even more than cottonbabies.com, which is the bumgenius creators online store.

Happy diapering!!
