Calling All Decorators

You know who you are... I won't name names unless I get desperate.

Just in case you need a reminder - here's the vintage map. On the walls in the back. Love it. Not quite certain on it for the kids room. I'm very inspired by the colors in Barbara Cooney's illustrations for the book The Little Fir Tree. In fact, it's exactly the kind of the feeling I want for the kids' bedroom in general. I've even thought about painting some of our favorite children's book quotes on the walls. Wouldn't that be fun?

So have at it! You have an entirely blank canvas to work with.

*Also, in case you're wondering. The torn shades (which badly needed replacing anyway) are the work of bored little hands that were supposed to be sleeping....

This is definately a beautiful big room with endless possibility! I love the vintage map color, my youngest ones have that color in their bedroom. You should paint images from the book right on to the wall! How cute would that be!?! For all my art training, creativity, and my Mom being an interior designer...I am having the same dilemma in my home. I can't for the life of me pick out a paint color for my first floor, and it needs to be re-painted YESTERDAY! Good luck!

I love the colors from the cover of the book! So cheerful. I also like the idea of the quotes on the walls (but... this comes from a girl who has TWO signs with quotes in the little ones room, another in my room, SEVERAL more downstairs, and I wear two bracelets with sayings/lyrics on them so you may want to take that into consideration! :) Post pictures of what you come up with for us!

OK. I have lots running through my head. I adore decorating children's bedrooms :) So I need some clarification.

1) Who is the bedroom for? Will both older children share this bedroom permanently? So needing to be gender neutral-right?

2) When sweet baby comes, will she also be in this bedroom? (I know initially she will be with you.)

3) I love the bunk bed idea. I love the ones we put in the boys bedrooms, it is a savior for floor space. Do you think Miss A is ready for that transition?

I think the colors you have from that Margaret Wise Brown book are beautiful. The light bluish is a pretty neutral color and the bright red gives it a nice pop. You could find older bunk beds at a Thrift Store, sand and paint it red (a vintagy red). Then the quilts go go on the ends of their beds, and you could get some mix and match sheeting and twin sized blankets so both beds would coordinate.

Another idea is to find an old copy of that book (or other books that fit that color scheme) and frame and mat them for a large framed collection on the wall. Then all the colors and the book you love will be framed up on the wall.

Another thing that I love to do on the walls is get some empty frames and frame some of the children's artwork, you could also do gallery collection that way.

One final though before I go and teach math class :) I have done this one since they were born. I get the first letter of their names (wooden $1.00 letters at Walmart/ craft store) paint them to match the color scheme and hang. Underneath that I hang hooks. Then I can always display their favorite outfits (cause they are so cute when they are little!)
and you can change out the cuteness with the season. For example, I have the kids Easter outfits hanging on their hooks. Even unborn baby girl has some cute newborn things on hers.

Sheesh. I could go on and on. I will check back after I know the answers to the questions that I posted above this lengthy novel.

From the long winded preggo in MN :)

I love the firefighter signs for over Steele's bed. I think the vintage map color will go perfectly with the reds, greens, yellows you want to incorporate. I also adore Barbara Cooney's illustrations and concur with Sarah that hanging some of her work would be beautiful. Also, one thought: since furniture arrangement will be tight, have you considered taking the doors off the closets? It would allow greater flexibility in furniture placement and give you a blank canvas for hangings over the doors. I'll keep thinking, but I think you have enough ideas to make this a gorgeous room!

I am such a loser.

I spent the whole morning over here trying to make you a "mood board" from polyvore.com. But I've got a long way to go before I figure out how to make one to my satisfaction.

Then I took a nap.

So here's the gist of what I was going to say:
Listen to Sarah. I love her kids' rooms.
Ha!!
Also, I would do the bunk bed thing. And one thing I've seen with bunk beds that I like is when there's a book ledge and wall lamp for each bunk. I think it looks really cozy.
I love the Vintage Map color...did you ever show the kitchen all painted on your blog? I want to see that!
That art would look great by Steele's bunk and I love that quilt. Maybe ebay for the diamond's quilt? Because it looks so great with Steele's and I LOVE that pattern!
So, basically:
1. I'm no help at all, but I love what you have planned.
2. I've wasted valuable time on polyvore.com (and I'm gonna blame you because I can)
3. Love the diamonds quilt. LOVE. IT.

Ummmm.... you guys totally rock!! I knew you'd help me out. So here's how I am - I have to get a picture in my head of what I want the room to look like and then I can start. I'm not really fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants when it comes to decorating.

Ok.. so let's see. First, to answer some questions:

1. All three will share this room for a while. Until we move, until the downstairs gets re-done and until we feel comfortable having kids downstairs. So, conceivably, we could end up having two bunks in there. I've conceived it... well, not technically... I haven't conceived any of them but, yah, you get my drift.

2. I agree - I think bunk beds are the answer. And I think Adia would do alright in a big bed. I've been looking on Craigslist and nothing so far but I'll keep looking. I wish the twin beds we have stacked into bunks. They're from my grandparents and I really like the style.

3. Love the idea of framing some pages of the book!! A little less daunting than actually trying to paint them on the wall - although I LOVED that idea too Plo. I checked the book out from the library again... I'm going to scan a few of the pages and post them. I got even more ideas - you're going to love them. They're the perfect colors.

4. Definitely love initials too - I'm thinking big ones painted on the wall in different colors?

5. Totally agreeing with Martha on the "separate nook" idea. I love it too when they each have their own shelf and lamp.

6. Michelle - I have also considered taking the doors off. Especially on the clothing closet since it always seems to be in the way. Might have to get to that.

7. Total bummer about the Diamonds quilt. I knew I should have bought one when they were on sale. That might have been my first clue that they were discontinuing it. Duh. It's still in a crib set - just not a twin bed. And I already checked on e-bay. Nuthin. Nuts.

8. Even though I love Vintage Map - I'm leaning toward Silver Sage from RH. It matches the book more and is a little more neutral I think.

9. LOVE the idea of painting the bunks. Red would be cool - or what about bright green?

10. I'm thinking either red with white polka-dot or green with white polka dot curtains. What do you think?

I'll post the book pics soon!

Thanks again everyone! Keep the ideas rollin!

This is the bunk bed we have and love...not real vintage-y but awesome and not too high off the ground.

We did the initials thing with just some big letters. we found wooden ones a painted and smooth that we found our favorite ribbon and just hung them on the wall.

So excited to see it when it's completed. No hurry...I know for me it's taken forever!

:) I think all in one room is great! Love the idea of green bunkbeds! Don't sweat the quilt thing either. The boys have 2 different quilts, but I tied it all together with a matching knit twin blanket and coordinating sheeting... if they are mismatched (quilts) I think it is even better.

Love the idea of the lighting and bookbins on the walls by the beds. Make it their own little area. I know PBKids sells those wall mounted book bins, but they are spendy. I wanted them for the boys bedroom.

I love your ideas for the curtains? Are you handy with a sewing machine? (I know you can knit! LOL)
I bet the fabric store would have lots to offer.

If you do bunk the beds, you can eventually tuck the crib in the oppposite corner- then find coordinating sheeting etc.

I also like the idea of taking the doors off the closets. You could do a small bifold door to fit the space instead - or match fabric to the window treatments and make a curtain doorway.

You mentioned you had bedrooms downstairs. Could you use those twin beds (they are adorable) as a guest room? Just a thought.

Now that I am done with bedrooms, I will live through you. One of my favorite things to do :)

Yeah...I've gotta say - those beds you have are DEEElish! But someday you can have them in a room together when you pair up a couple of kidlets.

And I love the idea of mis-matched bedding! Especially boy-girl mismatched - it'll look great and define their space in the room!

This is so exciting :)

I like the wallpaper in the Cooney picture. Could you wallpaper one wall in a similar color and print?

How 'bout these green dot curtain panels from Land of Nod..though they may not go with the Silver Sage paint, now that I think of it....
