Longer or Shorter?

Sorry for the terrible pic. Posting won over editing.

In pursuit of some more organization, Justin and I purchased 2 Lack shelves from Ikea. Originally, I was going to hang them to the right of the map but after thinking about it and realizing we really don't use the world map all that often yet, I've decided to move the map and hang the shelves above the desk. Plus, I think if I put them to the right, it all might look a little too crowdy. That's the technical term, of course.

So here's my dilemma: the shelves we purchased are a bit shorter than the desk. Perhaps just a tad bit narrower than the map. I'm wondering if I should return them and purchase ones that are a bit wider than the desk? Anyone out there with some design experience that might now? What's more pleasing to the eye? And please, I'm open to your thoughts even if you don't have design experience. I'm also worried that I might not even have enough stuff to fill up two long shelves.... and then will they look funny and bare? Thoughts?

Also, as a follow up to my last post and as a result of thinking about all your helpful comments - I've come to the conclusion that I don't necessarily have too much stuff... although we could all use some healthy purging from time to time, yes? The main problem, as far as I can see it, is that I don't have resourceful and logical places to put my stuff. Thus, the shelves and some new storage containers etc. But I have a goal... March 4th. On the to-do list: organize stuff, build kitchen benches, build bunks in closet for kids, paint bookshelf, find fixture for school room, move chandelier to bedroom, grow baby, find a name for said baby.

ps. Yes, there is always more to think about than shelves. ie. school planning, character building, birthing anxiety, etc etc but lately I only have the brain energy to think about shelves. If you want some good meat, be sure and visit my good friends Jodi or Stacy. They've been posting some great stuff lately. It makes me feel free to talk about shelves and just enjoy their meat.

Your eye wants to see small to big. So I would have narrower shelves at the top verses wider shelves. Eyes also like light to dark so going with the white shelves was a good idea. And that's what they taught us at Pier 1 :)

I think the fact that the shelves are narrower than the desk is not an issue. Removing the map and hanging them directly above the desk will look great.

If you have trouble, at first, finding enough things to put on the shelves, go find a basket or two that will fit and put them on there. Then you could put little trinkets in the basket, like extra crayons and markers and such. Just another storage space for your homeschooling stuff.

I think you are on the right path. Can't wait to see pictures! And I do expect pictures! :)

My initial thought was shorter... less risk of those shelves dwarfing your cute little desk. Though if I really needed the extra book storage I would go with the longer ones. Functionality first. But it doesn't sound as if you have that need. I just think your schoolroom is so stinking cute. I can't wait to see more pictures! And thanks for saying I've been posting good stuff. :) Miss you!!!

My favorite part of this post is: "lately I only have the brain energy to think about shelves." :) That's because your brain is working so hard to order your body to care for that baby! (Eeeee!) Love it.

Personally, I think shelves shorter than desk is optimal. Longer than the desk would feel too top-heavy. Shorter is just better. Move your map, hang them up, and happily think about how cute your new shelves look.

{Oh! And thank you for the compliment about posting great stuff!}

I think you're right in that it's not necessarily a matter of too much stuff. Like me, you're organized, you're not a hoarder. You don't need someone coming in and telling you what to get rid of. But the reality is that as much as we want to live simply, as much as we thrive in the midst of open spaces and clean lines, it ain't gonna happen in families our size, sharing spaces like this, and living in this culture. It just isn't.

I've had to lower my expectations and accept the new (okay, not so new for me anymore!) normal. Part of me hates that I'm now able to block out the various papers and what-not sitting on the counter ~ always visible from our one and only table. The other part realizes that I keep a clean, organized home and the "stuff" that bugs me is the natural by-product of having five children, owning a business, and homeschooling.

Having said all that, why have this battery, that screwdriver, and those assorted Legos and wires beeing sitting here for the past week? Ack!
